County Sports Finals (2016-2017)

Surrey School Games County Orienteering Finals (July 2017)

It was an incredibly exciting and busy day at the Surrey School Games County Finals on Thursday 13th July, held for the first time at St George’s College, Addlestone.  We had three teams of children competing on the day: our Year 1 and 2 Multi-skills team, our Year 6 Orienteering team and Dimitri in Year 6 was participating in the first ever County QuadKids competition.

We took six, Year 6 orienteering pairs to compete in the orienteering competition, for only the second time.  Last year, Walton Oak used some of our PE and Sport Premium money to install a permanent orienteering course around the School site for all our children to use during PE lessons.  It was money very well spent in our opinion, as our pupils got a fantastic new map of the school and a brand new course that allows teacher’s to create hundred’s of different orienteering courses to keep children on their toes.  These Year 6 children in particular loved the work that they did in their lessons with Miss Slaymaker, hence, they were invited to participate in the County Finals.

Every orienteering pair was given a course map and was set up with an electronic ‘dabber’, which was worn on the finger.  To become the winner, you had to locate all 22 control points (correctly) around the St George’s course, ’dab’ to prove you had found each control point, and complete the course in the quickest time possible.  Each pair was given a short time to look at the map, discuss a strategy as to which points they went to and in which order, then they were off, using a staggered start.

Once all the pairs from every school were back and safe at the start zone, the times were calculated and the positions were decided.  There were gold, silver and bronze medals awarded in both the best individual pairs and in the best school team.  Our very own pairing of Emily and Katy, managed to complete all 22 control points correctly in 24 minutes and 5 seconds, placing them in the silver medal position!  The girl’s were incredibly shocked to hear their names called out at the prize giving ceremony!

The second and final prize was the team award.  This was given to the school whose team completed the most control points in the quickest time possible when totalled together.  Out of the 6 pairs of children from Walton Oak, all 6 pairs got all 22 control points correct, the only school in the competition to achieve this!  This resulted in Walton Oak being crowned the County Champions and receiving the gold medal and certificate!  An absolutely amazing achievement for our children and our school.  We are so incredibly proud of the #PurpleArmy and their achievements!  Well done to the entire team.

TEAM: Katy, Emily, Cara, Leah, Summer, Lucy, Alex, Arsalan, Connor, Tommy, Jack and Kael.

Surrey School Games County QuadKids Final (July 2017)

Dimitri’s fantastic performance in the District Sportshall Athletics competition, held at the start of February, saw him be selected to represent Elmbridge and Runnymede in the County Final competition here at St George's.

He had to complete a 75m sprint, a 600m run, the standing long jump and throw a vortex howler, before racing in a team relay, against all the other schools from around Surrey.  The way the competition worked was: the quicker you ran and the further you jumped or threw, the more points you were awarded for your team.  Once all the team score were added up, the team with the greatest number of points were declared the winners.

On the day, Dimitri and his team performed fantastically well to win the bronze medal!  The highlight of Dimitri’s day was undoubtedly his amazing effort of 2.21m in the standing long jump, he's the best in Surrey!

A very proud moment for Dimitri, his family and this school — well done!

Surrey School Games County Multi-Skills Finals (July 2017)

We took a lovely group of Year 1 and 2 children to compete in the Multi-Skills competition.  These delights had to work as a team to complete a range of different sports activities which included throwing, catching, problem solving and used the fundamental movement skills that children this age learn.

TEAM: Ruby-Jean, Anastasia, Sean, Sam, Daniel, Niamh, Charlie, Oskar, Imogen and Juliana.

The team did not receive a medal on this occasion, but they had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and competed well all day.  Well done team!

Thank you to Mr Page, Mrs Torrens and Mrs Pacitti for attending the event with the children, and to all the lovely, supportive parents who cheered all our teams on!
