County Sports Finals (2017-2018)

Surrey School Games County QuadKids Final (July 2018)

Missie and Oliwer's fantastic performances in the District Sportshall Athletics competition, held at the start of February, saw them selected to represent Elmbridge and Runnymede in the County Quadkids Finals held at St George's, Weybridge at the end of the summer term.

They both had to complete a 75m sprint, a 600m run, the standing long jump and throw a vortex howler, before racing in a team relay, against all the other schools from around Surrey.  The quicker you ran and the further you jumped or threw, the more points you were awarded for your team.  Once all the team score were added up, the team with the greatest combined number of points were declared the winners.

On the day, Missie, Oliwier and the Elmbridge and Runnymede team performed fantastically well to win the silver medal.  The frustratingly annoying thing was the team missed out on the gold medal by a mere 5 points!  They were agonisingly close to first place, but they did however manage to go one better that the team last year, who picked up a brilliant bronze medal.

A very proud moment for Missie, Oliwier, their families and this school — well done to both of them!

Surrey School Games County Pop Lacrosse Finals (April 2018)

Walton Oak took part in the Year 5 and 6 Pop Lacrosse County Finals on Tuesday 17th April, which were held at the Xcel Centre, Walton-on-Thames as part of the Surrey Games Spring Festival. In gloriously sunny weather, Walton Oak were one of 12 primary schools vying for a place in the National Finals, taking place later in the year.

There were two pools of teams, with Walton Oak placed in Pool ‘B’ along with Send ‘B’, St Paul’s ‘A’, Royal Albert and Alexandra, Laleham and St Dunstan’s. All games were played on one of three pitches and each match was 5 minutes in length. The top four teams would progress to the knockout rounds.

This is only the second time our school has played competitive pop lacrosse, it is still a new sport for our children, and for this squad of children, it this was their very first EVER match of any kind! The team’s first game was against a very good Laleham team and the game ended in a 4-0 loss for Walton Oak. It was certainly an eye-opening start for the squad—getting use to the speed of the match on the large pitches. Walton Oak’s second game was against Royal Albert and Alexandra School with the result ending with another 4-0 defeat for the Purple Army. Despite the loss, our team were starting to get to grips with the tactics and were working better together to try and score a goal.

The third match was played against St Dunstan’s and they were a very good lacrosse team, shown with the ease that they managed to score 5 goals in a 5 minute game! Our fourth game was against Send ‘B’ and Walton Oak were working incredibly hard to score the elusive first goal of the tournament. Both Isabelle, Katriel and Geila all went close, but their shots went either side of the small pop-up lacrosse goal. Anis finally made the break through and chased down the pitch to score the first lacrosse goal for Walton Oak! It was not enough however, as Send ‘B’ managed to score 3 goals in reply!

The fifth and final game of the tournament for Walton Oak was against St Paul’s ‘A’ team. St Paul’s were a fabulous team who were fantastic at passing and shooting, scoring 5 goals past our team in the 5 minute match. After the five games were played and five losses were registered,, there was no knockout stages for us! However, although we were not successful in terms of results, the competition did provide a guide to how much work we’ll need to do, to be better prepared for next year’s competition. It was a fantastic afternoon of lacrosse in the sunshine and a thoroughly exciting time was had by the whole team!

TEAM: Isabelle, Missie, Katriel, Geila, Amy, David, Jeffrey and Anis.
